ISOMERISM
the phenomenon in which two or more compounds have the same molecular formula but differ in their physical and chemical properties. These compounds are known as isomers.
TYPES OF ISOMERISM :
Isomerism is broadly divided into two main categories:
1. Structural (constitutional) isomerism. 2. stereoisomerism.
I. Structural Isomerism:
Structural isomers have the same molecular formula but different in their structural arrangements of atoms. There are again sub divided into 5 types.
- 1.Chain isomerism 2. Position isomerism 3.Functional group isomerism 4.Metamerism 5. Ring–chain isomerism.
II. Stereoisomerism:
The isomerism in which molecules having same molecular formula but differ in their spatial arrangement of atoms is called stereo stereo isomerism.
It is of 2 major subtypes,
I. Configurational isomerism
2.confirmation isomerism.
